英語論文の書き方：英文ライティングの新定番テキスト “The Sense of Style”

先日出版されたばかりの英文ライティング・テキスト “The Sense of Style” を購入した。著者はハーバード大学心理学部教授の Steven Pinker で、TEDトークにも何度も登場した人気の言語学者だ。そんな彼の新刊 “The Sense of Style” は、以下のように各紙で大きく取り上げられており、英語ライティングの分野でひさびさに登場した注目の一冊と言えよう。

サブタイトルに “The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century” と付されているように、本書 “The Sense of Style” が、ライティングの新たな定番となることを目指して執筆された意欲作であるのは間違いない。

Bad writing can’t be blamed on the Internet, or on ‘the kids today’. Good writing has always been hard: a performance requiring pretense, empathy, and a drive for coherence. In The Sense of Style, cognitive scientist and linguist Steven Pinker uses the latest scientific insights to bring us a style and usage guide for the 21st century. What do skilful writers know about the link between syntax and ideas? How can we overcome the Curse of Knowledge, the difficulty in imagining what it’s like not to know something we do? And can we distinguish the myths and superstitions from rules that enhance clarity and grace? As Pinker shows, everyone can improve their mastery of writing and their appreciation of the art (yes, ‘their’).

特に本書は、従来の定番書 “The Elements of Style” (by Strunk and White) にとって代わり得るものである。何しろ Strunk によって1918年に書かれ、その後共著者 White とともに出版されてから既に50年以上が経つ “The Elements of Style” は、”a little dated” どころではないくらいの古典となってしまっているのだ。

Though still revered, “The Elements of Style,” to be honest, is a little dated now, and just plain wrong about some things. Strunk and White are famously clueless, for example, about what constitutes the passive voice.

その間、これを代替するライティングのテキストが登場しなかったわけであり、ようやく現れたのが今回の Pinker による本書 “The Sense of Style” というわけだ。もちろんこの書名には、Strunk and White に対するオマージュと、本作を Writing Style の新たな定番にするという意欲の両方が込められているのだろう。

New York Times でも “his book is more contemporary and comprehensive than “The Elements of Style,”” と評されているように、Pinker の本作は、よりモダンでより大局的な視点に立ったもの。論文を始め、英語で文章を書く人にとっては必読の、そして僕も今から熟読する一冊だ。
